Cost Effective Architecture by Studio Vanamu, Bengaluru.

As a part of 9th semester Cost Effective Elective, a three-day hands-on workshop from 9th to 11th of September was conducted by Studio Vanamu, Bengaluru, headed by Varun Thautam and Namrata Toraskar. The workshop provided intensive on-site learning.

Day 1 (9th September 2023) : The theory on Arches, Vaults, and Domes was explained with demonstrations. This helped us to understand the structural behavior of the members. This was followed by onsite learning of Rammed earth construction, Adobe and Cob techniques.

Day 2 (10th September 2023): The theory on Lime as a cost-effective material was explained by the Resource person Varun Thautam, followed by hands-on learning on-site, where we understood the process of Lime slaking and mixing. Practical Surface preparation for lime plaster gave a thorough understanding of the whole process. Lime and Mud plaster finishes were demonstrated with various proportions of different components of plaster.

A case Study of the Cost Effective Residence Project at Devanhalli was organized to give more understanding of all the theories explained.

Day 3 (11th September 2023) : Continued with the lime plastering practical and understanding process of burnishing. Case study Projects were presented followed by discussions.

The workshop gave students a full understanding of Cost-Effective Building Materials, Building Techniques, and their Application with hands-on experience. This will help to work and further strengthen the knowledge of this subject in the Elective Course.
