The Karnataka Information Technology Services (KITS) was established as a Society under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, to achieve the objectives contained in the Millennium Information Technology policy. To sustain and maintain the present pre-eminent position of Karnataka and Bangalore in the field of Biotechnology Karnataka Information Technology Services was renamed as Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology Services (KBITS). This organization helps the Department of Information Technology and Biotechnology in facilitating and promoting the Information Technology and Biotech sectors in the state. KBITS assists the Directorate of Information Technology and Biotechnology, for administering incentives and concessions to Information Technology and Biotechnology companies. KBITS promotes the growth of IT & Biotech companies by way of organizing, sponsoring and participating in National/International Workshops, Conferences, and Exhibitions etc.

The State Government, created the Department of Information Technology and Biotechnology with the objective of promoting growth of Information Technology and Biotechnology Industries in the state. Later, Department of Science and Technology also came to be attached to this department in the year 2003-04 and the Department was accordingly renamed as Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science & Technology. The state Government has constituted “Vision Group of Information Technology” headed by Shri. N.R. Narayana Murthy and “Vision Group of Biotechnology” under the chairmanship of Dr. Kiran Majumdar Shaw, which are the Apex Advisory Bodies for the Growth and development of IT & Biotechnology respectively in the State of Karnataka. The Department also organizes Annual IT Events (Bangalore IT.in and Bangalore Bio), which have been instrumental in attracting investment to the State.

KBITS

BangaloreIT.in, Asia’s premier ICT event, is initiated by the Department of Information, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka and STPI Bangalore, with the aim of facilitating business between Information, Communications, Media and Technology companies across the globe. BangaloreIT.biz is an ideal platform for ICT companies from across the globe to network with technology leaders in India. Bangalore Bio the flagship Biotechnology Event in India is promoted by the Department of Information, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka and the Vision Group on Biotechnology has emerged as the largest congregation of India’s Biotech community generating tremendous interest and response worldwide.

KBITS enables to project the State and its potential for investments, implementation of its policies and programmes, assisting industries in getting quick clearances, administering incentives and concessions announced in state policies. KBITS provides secretarial services to the State Level Single Window Agency and High Level Committee, for quick clearance of the Information Technology and Biotechnology Projects in the State. KBITS assists the Directorate of Information Technology and Biotechnology, for administering incentives and concessions to Information Technology and Biotechnology companies. KBITS is made single point stop for providing all basic information that facilitates the establishment of IT & Biotech Industries in the State. KBITS is the Nodal Agency for implementing the decisions of Vision Group on IT and Vision Group on Biotechnology.

Objectives of Incubation center

  • The main objective is to encourage students, research scholars and alumni to share their ideas to solve chosen problems which are local centric and to validate, Refine and Nurture ideas.
  • Incubation center shall provide an ecosystem to convert ideas into proofs of concept and upgrade them to a level of commercial value.A
  • After successful incubation, encourage and lead the teams towards setting up a business enterprise.

Overview of Hackathon

Hackathon is a 2 days workshop organized by GIT, Belagavi in association with KBITS, Govt of Karnataka. The Workshop is intended towards ideas generation, conversion of ideas into project proposals and conversion of project proposals into products.

Objective of Hackathon is to give an experience on the following to the participants:

  • Identification and validation of Unmet Needs
  • Invent & Implement Solutions
  • Creation of Business Model & Build Business PlanStudents from SIT Engineering College, Tumakuru and PDA college of Engineering, Gulburga, participated in the Hackathon at GIT, 30 Students from each college were selected for 2 days Hackathon workshop. It witnessed to be a grand success.
    Note: Applicable to both UG and PG.

Selection process for Hackathon (Pre-Hackathon)

Pre-Hackathon process involves 2 phases:

  • Phase 1 : Ideas/proposals presentation competition:

    Students who are already having ideas/proposals will present the same Ideas/proposals presentation competition. The presentations will be evaluated with respect to various parameters like Originality of the idea, Relevance of problem in regional /societal context, Feasibility of solution, Inclusion of IT component, and academic results. Short listed students may be interviewed to identify Entrepreneurial skills if necessary. Students more than cut off points will be selected for Hackathon.

    Ideas addressing regional problems/societal needs will have high priority.

  • Phase 2 : Qualifying test:

    Small Presentation by the students to the monitoring committee has to be done by few shortlisted students for the purpose of more clarity.

    Rs. 3 Lakhs funding

    College level monitoring committee and state level steering committee selected 10 projects after Hackathon from GIT, Incubation Center. Upto 3 Lakhs funding was done by KBITS, Govt of Karnataka for projects/proposals selected for Incubation center upon approval of screening committee. Each team was assigned a Mentors and Guide during the execution of project and they guide the teams in carrying out their project as per the guidelines. The regional coordinator, college coordinator and monitoring committee reviewed and monitor the Progress of the project during execution stage and submit the reports to Steering Committee.

MoU between KLS’s Gogte Institute of Technology, Belagavi and KBITS

Karnataka Government had constituted the Karnataka ICT Group under the Chairmanship of Sri Mohandas Pai to suggest various strategies and steps to be taken to increase the employment and revenues in the ICT sector in the state. The Committee has submitted the Report “Karnataka ICT Group 2020 i.e., KIG 2020 Report with several recommendations. One of the recommendations of the Committee was to build “New Age Incubation Network” in Engineering Colleges that are in the emerging ICT centers.

In the State Budget 2013-14 it has been announced as follows –

  • “To encourage Entrepreneurship and Innovation it is proposed to establish incubation centers in ICT sector in association with selected Engineering Colleges”.
  • The Department of IT,BT and S&T, Govt. of Karnataka had formed a committee to select the engineering colleges. 9 Engineering Colleges in the state have been selected and guidelines to implement the above scheme have been finalized.

Accordingly incubation centers were set up in selected Engineering colleges. KLS’s Gogte Institute of Technology, Belagavi is one of the 9 esteemed selected colleges in Karnataka to implement the above scheme.

Up to Rs 3 Lakhs will be provided by the Govt. of Karnataka to each selected IT project and each college can take up maximum of 10 projects in a year.
